A Modern Farmhouse
The Belk family of Chester, South Carolina, hired architect extraordinaire Ken Pursley to rebuild their farmhouse, and rebuild he did. Inspired by wood, tin and rope – the most humble materials! – Ken transformed a former brick-heavy construction into a light, airy and modern getaway.
With a vast, open kitchen accented in industrial elements and unique decor (we’re loving that farm-friendly birdhouse pendant!), the home feels cozy and welcoming.
A rope railing pays homage to the lakefront property with a fun, nautical spin.
Natural light floods the home, creating the perfect atmosphere for prolonged visits and afternoon coffee.
Farm animal prints are a must for any farmhouse, but these kelly green versions are the perfect fit for a more modern aesthetic.
An equally smart touch? A barn door-transformed-shower door for a rustic bathing experience!
well add some color to the walls and then its my dream house

Ive always wanted a house that was an old barn or church. Great example of why I love the idea so much.
A deconsecrated church in Southeast England becomes a self-built dream home. unconsumption:
Little did Willie Nelson know when he recorded “Crazy” years ago just how crazy it would become for our cherished family farmers in America. Nelson, President of Farm Aid, has recently called for the national Occupy movement to declare an “Occupy the Food System” action.
Nelson states, “Corporate control of our food system has led to the loss of millions of family farmers, destruction of our soil…”
Hundreds of citizens… joined Occupy the Food System groups, ie Food Democracy Now, gathered outside the Federal Courts in Manhattan on January 31st, to support organic family farmers in their landmark lawsuit against Big Agribusiness giant Monsanto…
The lawsuit addresses the bizarre and shocking issue of Monsanto harassing and threatening organic farmers with lawsuits of “patent infringement” if any organic farmer ends up with any trace amount of GM seeds on their organic farmland.
More activist musicians, please!

Cows Getting Busted by the Feds
For Dana Goodyear’s piece on raw milk in this week’s issue, Chris Buck photographed two models posing as F.D.A. agents on an organic dairy farm in Fresno, California.
How do you feel about raw milk?
It usually puts me on guard when I hear people speak with a religious fervor about something that’s, well, not religious. I feel like the person is looking to sell me something I don’t want or need. But our host at Organic Pastures in Fresno, California, Mark McAfee, is a good salesman, and, like all good salesmen, you end up wanting to buy from him. He spoke about the taste quality and the health benefits of raw milk to my assistant, our two models, and myself for most of the time that he had us within earshot, and I ended up asking him where I could get it in New York State (only directly from two farms upstate, apparently). From reading Dana Goodyear’s piece and hearing out Mr. McAfee, my take is that now is a good time for most states to reëvaluate the real dangers and benefits of raw-milk production.
